Over the past four years, Derek has been building and experimenting with self-made electronic and electro-acoustic systems for exploring nonlinearity, that most basic building block of chaos theory and the wonderful complexities of our natural world. Chaotic systems can be produced electronically (in the case of my analog synthesizers, or of a microphone placed in the path of a speaker), organically (Iannis Xenakis’ “collision of hail or rain with hard surfaces, or the song of cicadas in a summer field”) or even socially (the schizophrenic power dynamics of crowds observed by Elias Canetti).

Live presentations of “Nonlinearities” center around the interaction between two distinct chaotic systems: a DIY analog modular synthesizer which has been patch-programmed to self-modulate and an electro-acoustic SoundBox set up to feed back through a variety of found objects. Playing these instruments involves making interventions into this feedback loop, to destabilize it and allow new chaotic patterns to arise and develop — a constant struggle between finding and losing control. Without the risk of failure, no art can be called “experimental”.
